In Step Six we become willing to have God remove all our defects of character. This step is about reaching a point of readiness and willingness to let go of the negative traits, habits, and behaviors that have kept a person trapped in their addiction. It’s not simply about identifying character defects but about being genuinely prepared to release them and allow God to work in your life to bring about change. It requires deep humility and acceptance of the need for transformation.
The challenge of Step Six lies in surrendering control and trusting that the process of recovery will involve personal growth. Often, people may cling to old behaviors out of fear or comfort, even when those behaviors are harmful. Step Six pushes us to move beyond simply acknowledging our flaws to embracing a future free from them. It is a pivotal moment in recovery, one where we move from self-reliance to spiritual reliance, allowing the healing power of faith to lead the way toward lasting change.
