Step 7: Finding Freedom Through Surrendering Shortcomings

Writer's picture: Julie KleinhansJulie Kleinhans

In Reshape and Recover, Step 7 is about surrendering our struggles to God—asking Him to remove the habits, thoughts, and patterns that keep us stuck. This includes the grip that food can have on our hearts and minds.

We humbly turn to God because we know we sin and that God is perfect and can help us remove our sins. In fact, He already did that for us when He sent His Son who died on a cross for us. He loved us that much (John 3:16). Because He first loved us (1 John 4:19), we love Him and want to do our best for Him.

Even when we’re caught in the cycle of overeating, emotional eating, or shame, God’s love remains steadfast. He doesn’t wait for us to “fix” ourselves. Instead, He offers His love and grace as the foundation for true change.

✨ It’s not about striving for perfection—because who could ever attain that except Jesus? Instead, it’s about repenting, or changing our direction, and following Jesus to the best of our ability, out of love for the One who loved us first.

When we accept His love, it frees us to release the burdens we’ve been carrying—including our struggles with food. Step 7 becomes not just about asking for help but about trusting that the One who loved us first is able and willing to carry us through.

Imagine the freedom that comes when you let go of your shortcomings and let God fill the gaps. What would it feel like to love yourself the way God loves you?
