Step 1: Admitting the Truth About Food Addiction

Writer: Julie KleinhansJulie Kleinhans

For years, I told myself I just needed more willpower. If I could just eat “in moderation,” I wouldn’t struggle so much. But the truth? I was addicted to certain foods. No amount of self-control could change that.

Step 1 in our Christ-centered recovery is about honesty: "We admitted we have an addiction to certain foods and behaviors around food and that complete abstinence from our binge foods is necessary for recovery."

This wasn’t easy to accept. I wanted to believe I could still have “just one” without falling back into the cycle of obsession, guilt, and regret. But when I surrendered my struggle to God, He showed me a better way—not through deprivation, but through freedom.

John 8:36 says, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Real freedom isn’t found in trying harder—it’s found in trusting God’s strength instead of our own. When I finally let go of the foods that controlled me, I found peace I never thought possible.

If you’ve been trying to manage your eating but keep finding yourself trapped in the same cycle, you’re not alone. The first step to freedom is admitting the truth. What’s one area where you need to surrender control today
