How do I stop overeating? That was what I wanted to know over 15 years ago when I joined a 12-step program. As I learned to accept that I had an addiction similar to the alcoholic, it became clear I needed complete abstinence from my binge foods—mostly high-sugar, high-fat foods. This took care of the physical addiction, and I also worked on the mental obsession part of the addiction. Through the 12 steps, I learned why I had the mental obsession and how to heal and overcome it.
