How to Find Joy Beyond Food

Writer: Julie KleinhansJulie Kleinhans

Food is often used as a source of joy, comfort, and even entertainment. But true joy isn’t found in the temporary satisfaction of a meal—it comes from a deeper, more lasting source.

I remember working in downtown Minneapolis, walking with coworkers every day with one goal in mind: getting that sugary treat! It was the highlight of our walk, the thing I looked forward to the most. But over time, I realized that joy tied to food was fleeting.

Now, I find joy in time with my husband, Tony—hiking, biking, swimming, and playing our instruments in church. These activities bring fulfillment that food never could.

When we shift our focus from food to faith, relationships, and purpose, we begin to experience joy that goes beyond the plate. Spending time in prayer, finding meaningful activities, and embracing the blessings in our lives can help break the cycle of food obsession.

"The joy of the Lord is your strength." — Nehemiah 8:10
